Recognized as the #1 family-friendly zoo in the United States by Child magazine, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo features 2,000 animals on 56 acres of lush, natural habitats comprising seven main exhibit areas: Asian Gardens, Primate World, Free-Flight Aviaries, Florida Boardwalk, Florida Manatee and Aquatic Center, Wallaroo Station children’s zoo, and the new Safari Africa.
Since spring of 2004, the zoo has expanded Safari Africa, the largest exhibit area in zoo history. The first phases included African elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and many other African animal species on several acres of natural habitats. Safari Africa also became home to two amazing safari options with the addition of “Treetop Skyfari,” a 45-foot-high aerial ride that travels over several acres of the zoo’s animal habitats and the Safari Ride, a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the Safari Africa habitat area. The most recent additions to Safari Africa is the Ituri Forest, a 1.5 acre collection of tropical rainforest exhibits within the Safari Africa habitat, features cheetah, okapi, pygmy hippo, red river hogs and rare African birds. The zoo also features a flock of African Penguins in an exciting exhibit reminiscent of Boulders Beach in Cape Town, South Africa.
Spring of 2008 will bring the new Gator Falls flume ride, where visitors will board a rustic boat afloat in a stream and are carried up a wood-mill trough, above the treetops 30-feet above the ground. After switchbacks at the top of the track, the boat rapidly plunges to splashy finale beside the rare white alligators’ pool.
Safari Africa’s future plans include a state-of-the-art centralized banquet facility with air-conditioned dining decorated with high-end finishes and museum-quality artifacts, and additional animal exhibits.
